D#5, HW#6, Deadline Reflection

Well again getting it done minutes from the dead line of 11:59 :) However sometimes i work more efficiently when i know i have a set limit to work under. I was able to overcome the process of online peer editing. At first i did not believe it would be an effective practice. After completing my peer editing on other classmates, i had a change in the outlook of google documents as great peer editing tool. I was able to through peer editing to notice the same mistakes that i often slip out. Seeing the same error lead me to review my own paper only to notice others had already pointed them out.

D#5, HW#5, Field Research Ideas

For my field research i do not believe i personally have the time schedule working 40 hours a week and doing 13 credit hours at MCC and another like 3 credit hours at GCC. If i was able to i would created a survey and collect random data. I would also conduct interviews with genetic researchers and transplant surgeons. The reasoning behind this is to directly connect with the audience and those in the follow or related to the possible human cloning products. I would definitely start out by asking how they got into their line of work as a broad question. Leading my way to their beliefs of the possible future integration of human therapeutic cloning. As for observing a location, there are not really any possible areas to collect any data relevant to research.

D#5, HW#3, Peer Review Reflection

Alex Williams - WP#1 RD

Justin Winter - WP#1 RD

I learned from the peer editing that many issues i am aware of in my own work are common to others and without peer editing a lot of errors that the author has no idea exist. I did realize that in my own draft i forgot to double space and also that a weak point in my writing is that i often jumble word tenses.

My Reviewers for my WP#1 were:

Justin Winter

Paulette Estrada

and one unknown

Most comments were simple mistakes that i generally am aware i often slip up. Only one slightly out of usual is where i was asked if big words were used more than necessary. Throughout my education so far in13th year i have been pressured to enhance my vocabulary and increase the complexity of my sentences. With teachers throwing in all sorts of large vocabulary list to learn and then regurgitate the following weeks through quizzes. While i do believe that when due, simple English is profoundly perfect for the task. However, when creating a personalized group of words structured with a theme and sentence flow, you should try the hardest to grasp new words and enhance the language. On my originality report on turnitin.com i received a 0% match, reducing any need to alter my WP#1 excluding revisions.

D#5, HW#4, Annotated Bibliography x3

Being as most books do not contain a nice neat pre-formated citation i used noodle bib to compile my resources. Used two from ebrary and one from MCC Library database.

Annas, George J. American Bioethics : Crossing Human Rights and Health Law Boundaries. Oxford University, 2004. Ebrary. Mesa Comm. Coll., Mesa, AZ. 26 Sept. 2007 . This source is helpful to add on the information side of the aspect of ethics and morals. It contains also human rights content. In addition, it includes the health law angle of the controversy.

Ethical Issues in Human Cloning. Ed. Michael C Brannigan. Seven Bridges, 2001. Ebrary. Mesa Comm. Coll., Mesa, AZ. 26 Sept. 2007 . This resource could become a central backup of all technical aspects of cloning because it dives straight into my research question on the ethics and issues created by the research along the lines of human cloning. It contains information on both sides, such as the benefits and downfalls.

Musser, Susan, and David Haugen. Technology and Society. Opposing viewpoints series Unnumbered. Detroit: Greenhaven/‌Thomson Gale, 2007. This book contains chapters dedicated to the pros and cons of therapeutic cloning and the arguments to support both sides. In addition it talks about the enhancing of our children through genetics.

D#5, HW#1, Reading Reflection

After reading chapter 6 on types of resources in library's and methods to obtain the sources i believe that i will definitely will be revisiting the chapter. It contains a great list and methods of all information, and i learned that most databases only go from 1970-present. Which is a good reason to use a book resource to gain topics and viewpoints that have been establish in the past. Chapter 7 i enjoyed because i like conducting interviews and seeing the data from surveys. In high school i remember having to study surveys and write our own. Interviews were also a big topic for my entrepreneurship class.
As for the online portion the POWA link was dead. The workshopping and peer review page i can account for leaving a paper for a day or two, even just hours and then coming back and noticing errors. My high school ENG101 class we did multiple peer reviews and i found them to help my writing showing areas that make sense to me but not others.

D#4 HW#7, Deadline Reflection

This week i wrote my first ever research proposal. On my way to doing my first major college researching instead of boring high school English classes. The purdue at the OWL is now bookmarked as being a very usefully quick reference instead of the books. I really like the methods used on the site to convey information to the reader and the examples. Reading other peoples WP#1 papers helped me in being able to get a grip of kinda what in my mind i wanted to format and present my information, kinda like a quick sketch.

D#4 HW#2, Grammer

Ah everyones favorite. Well while visiting the Owl at Purdue i was easily able to spot my fault, Commas and Hyphens.

After reading through i did note some key sparks of knowledge i was unaware of such as in commas, "10. Use a comma to shift between the main discourse and a quotation," and that i never really known, or had to use a hyphen to continue a word on next line.

To conclude my revision, i am a little disappointed as it seemed i didn't revise much but in the past i know using commas and not using commas has been a biggie. As far as hyphens i now know the official grammar usage when i am handwriting a paper and run out of space so instead of just writing smaller and squeezing it in i now understand i can use a hyphen to breakup words in several ways such as "redecorat-ing."

Revised:

Cloning possibilities became a reality in February 1996 when Dolly the sheep was born from an adult somatic cell. This news headliner brought a wave of emotions and opinions on opposition for and against future cloning research. In addition, articles and protest surged in numbers. Currently today the number has significantly dropped, but still is a debatable topic.

My purpose is to inform and created a greater interest. Currently my position is half and half. Meaning I am for therapeutic cloning, but against destructive cloning. My audience of my final research project is the legislative branch that regulates medical practices and research. Sub audiences are those needing transplants, those chronically ill, and those who are tied in or related to any of the previous two.

D#4 HW#3, Research Proposal

Adams
ENG 102 7891

Draft WP#1 – Research Proposal
Cloning is a controversial topic that pertains to any human, yet often many individuals choose sides with little, wrong or even no knowledge of the topic at all. This is one of the first thoughts that ran through my head during my brainstorming for topics to create a paper sufficient enough to allow my interest to enhance the research. Also, I choose cloning because of the technological advances in today’s world that could allow cloning to become a bigger topic than currently. Through careful steps in structured productivity I manifested my research question to be:

Should cloning research in relations to humans be allowed to continue without restrictions, even though the safety and normal humane practices could be compromised?

Cloning possibilities became a reality in February 1996 when Dolly the sheep was born from an adult somatic cell. This news headliner brought a wave of emotions and opinions on opposition for and against future cloning research. In addition, articles and protest surged in numbers. Currently today the number has significantly dropped but still is a debatable topic. The leading reasons against cloning are the ethics and morals of creating clones of humans/animals and then harvesting them for medical treatment. Others are fearful of abuse of the technology. While even more claim cloning interferes with religious beliefs. On the pro position side, the leading components are the ability to cure many diseases and prevent cell mutation such as cancer. Also therapeutic cloning could be used to create transplants for select individuals. Other areas are to have a greater knowledge of how cells grow and what can be accomplished by changing certain variables. My purpose is to inform and created a greater interest. Currently my position is half and half. Meaning I am for therapeutic cloning but against destructive cloning. My audience of my final research project is the legislative branch that regulates medical practices and research. Sub audiences are those needing transplants, those chronically ill, and those who are tied in or related to any of the previous two. The analysis of my audience brought forth the understanding of needing the balanced argument of pro and con human cloning. The information will need to be concise and relevant.
Possible limitations of this project would be the chance and availability to do any polls or interviews of those in the medical research field. The hardest challenge to date would be selecting one side as I am divided and basically situational.

D#4 HW#6, Evaluating Sources

For my Evaluation i choose this source:
Pence, Gregory E. "Common Beliefs About Human Cloning Are Myths." Contemporary Issues Companion: Cloning. Ed. Sylvia Engdahl. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2006. Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center. Thomson Gale. Mesa Community College. 20 Sep. 2007.

I first noticed that domain for the site is an education domain (.EDU). I then went to lookup background information on my author, Gregory E. Pence. In the same article i found that "[He] is a professor in the philosophy department and School of Medicine at the University of Alabama" ("Common Beliefs About Human Cloning are Myths"). Next i looked to see how recently the article was published and noticed it was 2006. In side the article i believed it to be a valuable resource due to being able to use the information in a introduction or even as a body paragraph.

Pence, Gregory E. "Common Beliefs About Human Cloning Are Myths." Contemporary Issues Companion: Cloning. Ed. Sylvia Engdahl. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2006. Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center. Thomson Gale. Mesa Community College. 20 Sep. 2007 .

This source is a great quick info and run down about cloning. It debunks common myths that often are believed to be true or stereotype.

Jacobs, Margaret A. "Few Legal Barriers Prevent Human Cloning." Contemporary Issues Companion: Cloning. Ed. Lisa Yount. San Diego: Greenhaven Press, 2000. Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center. Thomson Gale. Mesa Community College. 20 Sep. 2007 .

This article whens written after the publication of the sheep being cloned in Scotland. It refers to President Bush's decision and position on trying to ban cloning yet nothing has been passed through the legislature. At end of paper there is a paragraph that states a patent was available at the time of publication for anyone wanting to coin in on the monopoly for the next 20 years.

D#4 HW#1, Reading Refection

In this weeks reading I have at times seemed like review which is nice cause i often can not remember all the best ways and it sets a little better how i plan to integrate my sources into my paper. It will be interesting to use the online peer review as in the past English classes we simply print extra copies and hand them around then read through each one later as talked about on the website. I will have to strengthen up on my revision as i know that is an area that i am not very good. But once again another week another homework. As i read more and more about critical reading and thinking i am noticing it as a key trait to practice and become more proficient in such as in Chapter 8 of the book.

Deadline #3 HW# 4 Invested in Topic/Research Question

For this week of deadlines i believe that the reading and hands on rhetorical information was most beneficial. Especially on being able to use a click information source that involves no time consuming skimming of multiple pages. This week helped better my understanding in creating a properly structured research question and identifying the five key components. I did little referring to others blogs this week to check my work to insure parallelism with my classmates. I am not sure to as why but i guess i just hammered through it all.

D#3 HW#7, Annotated Bibliography x4

George E. Seidel, Jr., "Cloning (genetics)", in AccessScience@McGraw-Hill, http://www.accessscience.com, DOI 10.1036/1097-8542.YB010740

This source goes into the application of cloning from testing with animals into futuristic applications of creating organs and tissue for human transplants. It also concludes with a good quote on how cloning can be used for good or evil.
__________

Jaenisch, Rudolf. "Some Forms of Human Cloning Should Not Be Banned." Opposing Viewpoints: Genetic Engineering. Ed. Louise I. Gerdes. San Diego: Greenhaven Press, 2005. Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center. Thomson Gale. Mesa Community College. 19 Sep. 2007 &contentSet=GSRC&type=retrieve&tabID=T010&prodId=OVRC&docId=EJ3010138257&source=gale&srcprod=OVRC&userGroupName=mcc_mesa&version=1.0>.

In this resource the topic of banning of human cloning is one of the main themes throughout. The article leans toward a controlled ban on cloning allowing only therapeutic cloning to still exist for medical treatments.
__________
Bush, George W. "Both Human Reproductive Cloning and Therapeutic Cloning Should Be Banned." Contemporary Issues Companion: Cloning. Ed. Sylvia Engdahl. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2006. Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center. Thomson Gale. Mesa Community College. 19 Sep. 2007 &contentSet=GSRC&type=retrieve&tabID=T010&prodId=OVRC&docId=EJ3010073232&source=gale&srcprod=OVRC&userGroupName=mcc_mesa&version=1.0>.

This source is started out with President Bush's position on the topic of human cloning in banning all forms and list 4 main reasons against human cloning. The author of the source is President Bush stating his many different reasons against human cloning in all aspects.
__________
"The Uses and Ethics of Cloning." Britannica Book of the Year, 1998. 2007. Encyclopædia Britannica Online. 18 Sept. 2007 .

This source starts from the stand point of no knowledge on topic giving a introduction into different types of cloning and leading into common sides of pro and con. The most useful included section would be on the possible applications of cloning such as cystic fibrosis research.

D#3 HW#6, "...further flesh out..."

My research question is post in D#3, HW#2 (just below a bit). I am a little unsure on my context definition but i believe that my context for my research is that cloning has already been successful at cloning sheep but at very low such as approximately only 3 alive one survived out of about 300 sheep. My purpose of research is that i have often only seen minor news on cloning and never really viewed what it is all about and what are the complications to implementing the technology. I believe that after this research i should be much more informed and aware of both sides of the topic. I believe that i fit into the context cause i am not fully aware of the dangers or setbacks that unregulated cloning could present to the United States. The five question affect one another due to the fact that they all talk about the same topic and must all be presently put into consideration to gain a effective upper hand on quality of research.

Of the five elements of the rhetorical situation: topic, context, purpose, audience, author; they will change from WP#1 response compared to WP#3 because once i reach WP#3 i will have a greater knowledge and more open minded to the pro/con of the topic.

D#3 HW#5, Audience Analysis

I reviewed the Rhetorical Situation flash and html versions and i must be blind on finding the "Some Questions to Help with Audience Analysis." However, using common sense i picked the FSMB (Federation of State Medical Boards) and similar organizations. The main reason is because it is a non profit organization dedicated to the practice of medicine being carried out and introduced. Being mainly based in the United States with a few outlying medical boards it brings the debate to our nation. Also, it would be my belief that an organization as such with associations to major medical and legal organizations would have best interest for the public.

D#3 HW#4, Audience of Research

I would have to start that the primary people is those directly related to benefits or downfalls of human cloning such as organ donors, people on transplant waiting list, rare diseases, or possibly cancer patients. The ones that are in the most effective position to create legislature to protect or limit human cloning would be the medical research and practice regulators. With the information that i plan on obtaining and expressing through an essay could be used to motivate and inform the naive. Thus, creating a movement that will produce a end product.

D#3 HW#3, Search Plan

Well as with any "research plan" i intend to use a subscription database containing information revelent to my research question previously posted:

"Should cloning research in relations to humans be allowed to continue without restrictions, even though the safety and normal humane practices could be compromised?"

My primary type of source that i prefer is pro/con layout of an issue or topic. One such site that is designed around this method is Opposing Viewpoints. In all because of the library orientation i also have the MCC library resource list to access more information on my topic. My goal of tyope of source to find is multiple different views of human cloning and moral ethics information on public opinion.

D#3 HW#2, Narrow Topic to Research Question

I first went back to pages 34-35 in the Bedford Researcher to skim back over the reading from earlier. Then after a few more skims and quick references i went online and did a little more readings into my broad topic of "cloning." This rereading i believe helped set my mind into helping produce a research question the most cause it creates curiosity in certain specific areas of the research topic. One area that in quick reasoning i thought be easy was determining the readers and roles. In all do my rough research question is:

Should cloning research in relations to humans be allowed to continue without restrictions, even though the safety and normal humane practices could be compromised?

Well thats it folks. I hope i centered in enough and most likely in a day or so i will realize something that needs tweaking.

D#3 HW#1, Reading Reflection

Well after reading this weeks assignments from the deadline sheet i have been opened to a hole new type of research essay. In the past, my research/persuasive essays have been you go to the library browse topics then write thesis and then find sources and write essay. However, it does make much more sense to us a research question and refine it as defined in Chapter 3. I see where it prevents that stress of where to start. I feel pretty confident on being able to find information due to that there are others subscription databases that i have used in past such as SRC Gold and SIRS. In turn, providing more access to information in different formats. One thing that is a little unclear is the purpose of the Rhetorical Situation flash/webpage. I get the 5 components, but the 3 examples i believe is what they are school, home, work; don't know how connected fully.

D#2, HW#7, Deadline Reflection

First i have to say that finally i am here. At number 7! been a long night and week. However, i did throughly enjoy the extra time not in class this week. I would have to say that this was a substantial larger amount of a deadline. Hoping that not always like this. I did get a finally knowing what is the true purpose of annotated bibliographies and what is contained in them. I liked being able to be online and checkup on my progress by looking at other peoples blogs that so kindly didn't get so close to the deadline.

D#2, HW#6, Annotated Bibliograpgy Internet

For my first search i used standard good old google with term "video games."

"Video game." Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Wikipedia. 7 Sept. 2007
.

Classic wikipedia type of layout and content being provided and edited by the users. the page defines what a video game is being "A video game is a game that involves interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device."

"Cloning." Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Wikipedia. 7 Sept. 2007
.

Goes into the aspects of different types of cloning such as molecular, cellular, therapeutic, and reproductive. Also talks about the ethics and topics of discussion relating to cloning.

D#2, HW#5, Reflect

My initial spark of interest in the topic of cloning is that if we have the ability as of right now why are we not implementing it. If we are using it then why does the public not know more common knowledge about cloning being used today. I haven't searched to deep into sources yet to know. However, i am sure during my research i will find out. I do remember a few years ago reading popular mechanics and they had an article on cloned sheep and the process was completed successfully. If someone could use cloning to produce a new clean heart that can be fitted to anyones blood type on order. It could save many lives and other human organs could be grown such as lungs for smokers. The one con that i can think of right now would have to be the possibility of getting replaced by a clone.

D#2, HW#4, Narrow Topic

I picked the topic of "cloning" to do for my research in class. The reason that i picked cloning is that i never really heard the scientific and reasons for and/or against it. I would like to know why some people oppose it so harshly and vice versa. After analyzing the assignment knowing i would need a good topic with info that is easily obtainable i started going to the opposing viewpoints. Once there i did a keyword search on cloning and found source numbers are good. Browsing the sources that i found in my quick search definitely help assure myself that it would be a good decision.

D#2, HW#3, Annotated Bibliography

For my CQ Researcher search input i used "energy." My aim was to find info on alternative fuels and energy conservation. Here are the three topic area fitting.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Mantel, Barbara. "Energy Efficiency." CQ Researcher 16.19 (2006): 433-456. CQ Researcher Online. CQ Press. Mesa Community Coll., 6 Sept. 2007 .

The overview of the source is that America needs to maintain and improve it's efficiency as finite materials prices rise. On such example is gasoline for transportation. Statistics due show trend over time of efficiency of appliances such as refrigerators use less than half electricity since 1972.

Cooper, Mary H. "Renewable Energy." CQ Researcher 7.41 (1997): 961-984. CQ Researcher Online. CQ Press. Mesa Community Coll., 7 Sept. 2007 .

The main theme of information of the source is showing that renewable energy has increased dramatically since the oil imbargo during the 1970s. While renewable energy methods have been put into use more common, still more needs to be done to began moving away from oil.

Weeks, Jennifer. "Nuclear Energy." CQ Researcher 16.10 (2006): 217-240. CQ Researcher Online. CQ Press. Mesa Community Coll., 7 Sept. 2007 .

This source presents information about President Bush uplifting ban to sell India nuclear fusion components and fuel. It goes into detail on the benefits of knowing India is developing nuclear weaponry, yet still being safe. Also talks about how money is wasted in upgrading older nuclear plants to new higher out puts of electricity to meet demand. However, it is often cheaper and more efficient to build a new facility.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Second search was with term "guns." Just for curiosity.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Hosansky, David. "Youth Suicide." CQ Researcher 14.6 (2004): 125-148. CQ Researcher Online. CQ Press. Mesa Community Coll., 7 Sept. 2007 .

This soucre goes into the aspects of youth suicide and if guns could possibly prevent a significant amount of deaths. The auther believes that access to firearms is the key action that should be taken into effect. Sadly, fifty percent of youth suicides method of choice was using a firearm.

Jost, Kenneth. "Gun Violence." CQ Researcher 17.20 (2007): 457-480. CQ Researcher Online. CQ Press. Mesa Community Coll., 7 Sept. 2007 .

The source talks about if the shooting at Virginia Tech. could have been prevent with more control of people with sociological backgrounds or triggers. The stress on gun laws is due to 82 people killed a day amounting to around 30,000 a year.

Koch, Kathy. "School Violence." CQ Researcher 8.38 (1998): 881-904. CQ Researcher Online. CQ Press. Mesa Community Coll., 7 Sept. 2007 .

This source is in relation to how safe are schools in America. The question was posed after the 1997 shooting at Heath High School. It also show examples of what most schools now imposed as rules such as the implication of zero tolerance policy.

D#2, HW#2, Posting

Posted on Alexander's blog post here.

D#2, HW#1, Reading Reflection

Well i would have to say that first link , was a no show no go. I received a HTTP error 404 which equals no page by that name hosted anymore. In the "Everything's an Argument" book in chapter one, it seemed that arguments is the primary way everything is technically discovered and proven.
MLA format reading was easy review. Nowadays nearly every high school teacher strictly enforces MLA formatted papers only. Shouldn't be an issue for me. Maybe a few rusty mistakes.
As for implementing MLA format work cited papers for research, i have grown accustomed to using the online program Noodlebib.
